We all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation.
As part of National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June 2025), Neighbourhood Centres brought people together as an opportunity to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to reconciliation in Australia.
Through this work, Centres are helping to build communities that truly value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.
Mareeba Community Centre brought Elders together for their first Reconciliation Morning Tea (pictured here) creating a welcoming space for connection.
Althea Projects Inc. held a weaving and beading session followed by a home-cooked Torres Strait Islander feast, led by Kaurareg women from the Torres Strait Island traditional lands of Erubam Le (Darnley Island) and Badhulgal (Badu Island).
Encircle Kallangur Neighbourhood Centre marked the week with a traditional smoking ceremony, dances, water blessing and delicious morning tea. They have also translated some resources, including Sorry Day information, into First Nations languages.
Picabeen Community Centre welcomed Ivan Harrison Snr and Jnr for a traditional musical performance during their regular community BBQ, inviting everyone to come together and listen and learn.
Community Plus+ West End Community House hosted a community breakfast, creating space for neighbours to connect over toast, tea and meaningful conversation.
Kyabra Community Association Inc.. hosted a didgeridoo demonstration by Lionel Cubby, who shared the stories of animals and Country through music.
Benarrawa Community Development Association welcomed the community for their Annual Sorry Day Ceremony and was joined by NCQ CEO, Cate Akaveka.
Nambour Community Centre staff joined the Aunty Betty Memorial Walk at Dicky Beach, honouring a very special First Nations woman and Elder.
Reconciliation lives in our everyday actions and relationships. Let’s continue walking this path together.
