Sunday 4 August was National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day – an opportunity to celebrate First Nations children.

“We see the magic in our children when they are strong in kin, family and community,” says proud Yankunyjatjara and Wirangu woman, Shelley Ware.

All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children deserve to thrive, and this involves honouring the significant role of culture, family, and community in their development.

To celebrate, Kyabra Community Association Inc. held ‘Murri Kids in the Park’, a fun, free event at Richlands Community Centre including art activities, stalls, music and the Kyabra Play Bus.

Cooktown District Community Centre and partners held an event at the local parklands, celebrating local Indigenous culture. Respected Elders attended to talk to children and families and there was also craft activities and a BBQ.

Many Centres, including Mura Kosker Sorority Inc., Whitsunday Neighbourhood Centre, The Neighbourhood Hub and Chinchilla Community Centre also shared information about the day on their social media channels.
