Neighbourhood Centres across Queensland work towards Domestic and Family Violence prevention all year long, creating safe, welcoming spaces where people can access support, build connections, strengthen protective factors and access support when they need it.
NCQ’s 2025 Sector Impact Report demonstrates that 28% of Neighbourhood Centres also provide specialised domestic and family violence services, while 30% provide family support services.
Throughout May, Centres recognised Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month through a range of events, activities and conversations:
💜 Nambour Community Centre created a community installation exploring the impact of words and their power to both harm and heal. They also created a video reaffirming their stance against domestic and family violence. Watch the video here.
💜 The Neighbourhood Hub partnered with the Zonta Club of Mackay to display Orange Ladies at both Centres throughout May, helping raise awareness and share information about local support services.
💜 Childers Neighbourhood Centre hosted their first Candlelight Vigil for Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, bringing the community together to remember, reflect and raise awareness.
💜 Community GRO, Act for Kids and Kids of Purple launched the Tree of Healing interactive art piece at Garbutt Community Centre. Community members were invited to participate by adding their own flowers and messages, creating a visual statement of support and awareness.
💜 Burdekin Community Association and partners in their community hosted a DFV Awareness Walk, bringing the community together to show support for victim-survivors, encourage conversations and stand united against DFV.
💜 Kyabra Community Association attended a Sunshine Coast candlelight vigil, sharing information about their Mobile DFV program and connecting with community members and allies.
💜 South Burnett CTC encouraged organisations and groups across their region to wear purple in support of victim-survivors.
We know many more Centres marked Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month in their own communities. If your local Centre held an event, activity or awareness initiative, we’d love you to share it in the comments on our Facebook post.
