Since stepping into the role of NCQ CEO on 21 October, Cate Akaveka has been actively visiting Neighbourhood Centres in and around Brisbane. Accompanied by NCQ Sector Lead, Chris Mundy, Cate has been prioritising meeting Neighbourhood Centre staff and volunteers, learning about their work and deepening our understanding of the communities they support.
In the new year, Cate looks forward to visiting even more Centres across Queensland, hearing their stories, and gaining firsthand insight into the strong connections each one has with their communities.
Visits so far include:
- An introduction from Karen Hayes to the Sherwood Neighbourhood Centreon Brisbane’s south side. Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre became a Community Recovery Hub and important place of support during the 2022 floods, and two years on continues to support people and the community recover.
- A welcome to the St. David’s Neighbourhood Centre in Coopers Plains by Kellie Griffiths and Karen Shapcott. St David’s Neighbourhood Centre offers locals the chance to enjoy a range of activities at no cost or low cost. Just this month they hosted a baby animal day (with an animal farm), a ‘painting for pleasure’ exhibition and a family disco.
- Connecting with Paula Callaghan and the Benarrawa Community Development Association. ‘Benarrawa’ is a Yagara name for the waters and lands of the, now named, Oxley Creek. Elders gave permission to use it upon incorporation in 1995. Benarrawa is a small and beautiful Centre in Graceville that connects locals through their outreach, events and community garden.
- Meeting with Susan Allan from the Sandgate and Bracken Ridge Action Group Inc (SANDBAG Inc) at the Sandgate Community Centre. SANDBAGis passionate about creating community connections; they host Sandbag Live (a live music event each month), community BBQs, drum circles, art trails, toy swaps, opportunities to meet local business owners and so much more!
- Meeting with the Northside Alliance of Neighbourhood Centres (NANC) members Sharon Gingell (Northside Connect), Tanya Smith (Zillmere Community Centre) and Jillian Warren (Picabeen Community Centre). The Alliance comes together to provide greater access to services for all community members within the northern communities of Brisbane.
